Nonplanar sensing skins for structural health monitoring based on electrical resistance tomography

چکیده

Electrical resistance tomography (ERT)-based distributed surface sensing systems, or skins, offer alternative techniques for structural health monitoring, providing capabilities of, example, damage, strain, and temperature. Currently, however, the computational utilized skins are limited to planar surfaces. In this paper, overcome limitation, we generalize ERT-based nonplanar surfaces covering arbitrarily shaped three-dimensional structures; construct a framework in which reformulate image reconstruction problem of ERT using Riemannian geometry, solve resulting numerically. We test series numerical experimental studies. The results demonstrate feasibility proposed formulation applicability geometries.

Title : Multifunctional Sensing Skins for Structural Health Monitoring for Fifth International Workshop on Structural Control and Monitoring 2008

The integrity and safety of metallic structures can be jeopardized by structural damage (e.g., yielding, cracking, impact, corrosion) that can occur any time. While various sensors have been proposed and validated for structural health monitoring, most sensors only provide data at a discrete point on the structure. Here, a carbon nanotube-polyelectrolyte sensing skin is proposed for monitoring ...

Smart Sensing Technology for Structural Health Monitoring

“Smart” sensors with embedded microprocessors and wireless communication links have the potential to fundamentally change the way civil infrastructure systems are monitored, controlled, and maintained. Indeed, a 2002 National Research Council Report [1] noted that the use of networked systems of embedded computers and sensors throughout society could well dwarf all previous milestones in the in...

Networked Sensing for Structural Health Monitoring

1 This paper describes an ongoing project investigating embedded networked sensing for structural health monitoring applications. The vision is of many low-power sensor “motes” embedded throughout the structure with a smaller number of nodes that can provide local excitation. The challenge is to develop both the networking algorithms to reliably communicate within the network, and distributed a...

Electrical resistance tomography for monitoring emulsions and foams

There are several techniques available for monitoring emulsions and foams. Early studies usually referred to global measurement of the volumes of the emulsion/foam and of the separated liquid versus time. However, it was soon understood that phase separation is not only a function of time but also of location. With regard to simplicity and fast response, electrical measurements offer a tempting...

Low Cost UAV-based Remote Sensing for Autonomous Wildlife Monitoring

In recent years, developments in unmanned aerial vehicles, lightweight on-board computers, and low-cost thermal imaging sensors offer a new opportunity for wildlife monitoring. In contrast with traditional methods now surveying endangered species to obtain population and location has become more cost-effective and least time-consuming. In this paper, a low-cost UAV-based remote sensing platform...
